This brilliant idea came from the organisers of the London Marathon - a 26 mile event - which annually raises many millions for charity.

The Marathon has been postponed and many other sponsored events have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Opportunities to raise money are vanishing. This means many charities across the UK will no longer get income they were counting on and might struggle to continue supporting their chosen causes.

The certainly has hit the Kanyike Project hard. The five primary schools who traditionally raise money for us in Lent or May can no longer do so. St. Francis’ College will no longer be able to hold its annual summer picnic and has already cancelled its Quiz in aid of Kanyike. I expect the Summer Cream Tea held at a local church will also not take place. I hope those who support us through their Harvest Festivals will be able to do so. The Welwyn Hatfield Rotary Club Centenary Walk (20.2 k), which I should have taken part in last Sunday has also been cancelled. Last year, we raised about £1000 for Kanyike by taking part.

This year's marathon would have been special: the 40th London Marathon, 26 miles long, falls on the 26 day of April. The number 26 resonates. The idea is that as many people as possible do something - ANYTHING - involving the number 26 over the course of the seven days from Sunday 26 April.

The 2.6 Challenge can be any activity you like: walk 2.6 miles, hold a 26 minute silence, hold an on-line readathon with 26 friends, bake 26 cupcakes, or take the dog out for 26 minutes...

Whatever your age or ability, you can take part, so long as it's within current Government guidelines.

You can also help inspire others to take part by sharing pictures or videos of your challenge on social media or email to contact@kanyikeproject.org.uk

Raising money is not essential. It is enough to think about Fr Kakuba and the villagers. Just have fun carrying out the challenges. I hope you'll join me!
